Less cute, more sporty
The Beetle looks more macho than ever before with its flatter roofline and updated front end. But its familiar smiling face remains. When you buy a Beetle you know it’s never going to go out of style. But it’s much more than just a pretty face. Volkswagen hasn’t compromised anywhere on the 2016 Beetle. The available engines pack a lot of punch. Whichever one you choose, you’re getting turbocharged power. If you want ultimate performance, pick the R-Line with 210 horsepower. For the best gas mileage, go with the TDI Clean Diesel at up to 41 mpg highway.
The style carries over to the interior, where cool features like customizable ambient lighting, Kaferfach glovebox, and leatherette seats are standard. You can also opt for a panoramic sunroof and Fender premium sound system. But sometimes it’s the interior features you don’t see that are most important. Like the Beetle’s reinforced safety cage and Intelligent Crash Response System, which now includes Automatic Post-Collision Braking. Its five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration proves that there’s a protective side to the Beetle. Volkswagen has recently revealed that it will be producing a version of the Beetle Dune concept car we saw a while back. This vehicle delivers an off-road feel and look to the modern Beetle, and we sure can’t wait to get behind the wheel. Though the model retains many of the same specs as the current Beetle and Beetle Convertible models, including the 170-horsepower 1.8-liter engine, the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle design features have us comparing it less to the modern-day Beetle and more to the classic Baja Bug.
One of the subtle design changes that Beetle fans may not pick up on at first glance is that the Dune actually sits a little wider and a little taller. For the Beetle Dune, VW engineers have raised the ride height by 0.4 inches and widened the track by 0.6 inches. It may be a subtle change, but it goes a long way in completing the Beetle Dune’s off-road stance.
In addition to looking rugged, the 2016 Beetle Dune has a sporty quality to it thanks in part to a new front bumper design that includes a large central air intake and honeycomb vents enveloping the vehicle’s foglights. In the rear, the Dune has standard LED taillights, a large spoiler, and a new bumper design combining matte black and aluminum elements.
Inside, driver’s will find many of the same features in current Beetle models, including a touchscreen infotainment system. Some more subtle features include orange stitching on the seats and a multifunction steering wheel.
More of what you want: Everything
There aren’t too many Volkswagens that let you drop the top when the weather is beautiful, but the Beetle gives you that option. And that’s just the beginning of what you can do to customize your Beetle. The Classic model gives you the full retro vibe with its throwback wheels and upholstery. The R-Line turns the performance up to 11 with big rims, sport suspension, painted calipers, and exterior mods. There’s also a full line of accessories to make every Beetle unique.
But most exciting for 2016 is the upcoming Beetle Dune. The Dune gives rugged looks reminiscent of the Baja Bugs of the 1970s. Its off-road inspired styling is something completely new for this generation of the Beetle. If you could see yourself in a new Beetle this year, then our friendly staff would love to see you at Woodland Hills VW in Woodland Hills CA.
